Printed implants may not end up being better or worse than traditional options but will give clients more control.
As it is already, implants are not one-size-fits-all. They come in multiple shapes, sizes and materials. However, they are mass manufactured rather than tailor-made for the individual client. For most clients, this is perfectly fine; by selecting the right shape and volume, they still get the look they want.
But this isn’t true for everyone. And even those who would be happy with a standard breast implant might simply prefer the idea of a custom one. Ultimately, having more breast implant options can’t hurt.
3D Printed Implants Change How We Think About Augmentation
If you are picturing these printed implants in your head right now, chances are the image isn’t quite right. Far different from traditional implants, these are a 3D shell that is designed to dissolve away within about a year. Once the implant is placed, it encourages the body to grow breast tissue within it.
Out of the current breast implant options on the market, this is most similar to fat transfer augmentation. The key difference is that fat transfer augmentation does not require the shell and final results are seen faster. However, the exact shape achieved may not be quite as controlled as with the 3D implants being developed.
