Tummy Tuck

Abdominoplasty surgery can give you the tightened and toned belly you want and improve abdominal definition.

About Tummy Tuck

Excess stomach skin and fat can stand in the way of confidence. Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, can transform a flabby stomach into a trimmed, toned midsection, helping men and women who are self-conscious about their waistline to feel and look their best again.

When looking for a tummy tuck in or near Denver, you want the best surgeon to help you meet your goals. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Francesco Campanile has been practicing plastic surgery since 1997 and specializes exclusively in body contouring and breast enhancement. He custom-tailors each tummy tuck to meet the specific needs of the individual.

Some people have strong abdominal muscles that are hidden under excess skin and fat. Others have good skin tone or a small amount of fatty tissue near their abdomen, but their abdominal muscles have become stretched or separated. Pregnancy, significant weight fluctuations and the aging process can all affect the stomach’s appearance, resulting in excess skin hanging around the belly.

Your Tummy Tuck Procedure

Campanile begins a tummy tuck by making a horizontal incision below the belly button that runs from hip to hip. Typically, this is placed low enough to be hidden easily by everyday clothing and swimwear. Through the incision, he removes fatty deposits and tightens the underlying muscles, then removes any excess skin before closing the incision.

For more comprehensive results, Dr. Campanile may recommend his exclusive C.L.A.S.S. tummy tuck, which includes liposuction for additional body contouring. This drain-free tummy tuck technique can offer a number of benefits over traditional abdominoplasty in the right candidates.

Many people also opt to have liposuction on other areas of the body, such as the hips, arms or back, to further complement their tummy tuck results.

Tummy tuck recovery times vary from individual to individual. Most people are able to return to work after plastic surgery near the 2 week mark but need at least 4 weeks before they can resume their normal activities. Dr. Campanile can advise you more on what you can expect after your tummy tuck.

The Best Results

Many women may decide to include a tummy tuck as part of a mommy makeover to rejuvenate their entire figure. However, abdominoplasty can also deliver impressive results as a solo procedure.

In people who have achieved significant weight loss and are at or near their goal weight, plastic surgeon Dr. Campanile may suggest combining a tummy tuck with additional body contouring surgeries such as a thigh and body lift.

Tailoring the procedure to the physical needs and cosmetic goals of each person is the best way to achieve the results you’re looking for. Dr. Campanile will work closely with you to decide which approach will help you achieve an optimal outcome.

Procedure Preparation Guide: Tummy Tuck

Preparation for surgery starts long before you come into our Denver practice for your tummy tuck. It’s best for patients who are getting ready for this procedure to start the process weeks or even months before entering the operating room. From the initial consultation all the way to recovery, this guide will help you navigate your procedure with confidence.

    At Your Consultation

The process of ensuring a positive tummy tuck experience is to pick the right surgeon. When searching for the best tummy tuck surgeon near you, you want to be sure to look for board certification and experience performing the procedures. Here are a few typical questions that should be asked at your initial consultation to help choose your doctor:
    • What board certifications and specialized training do you hold?
    • Do you include liposuction as part of the tummy tuck?
    • How many abdominoplasties do you perform annually?
    • What is your complication percentage rate?
You want to feel comfortable with your surgeon as a qualified professional, and also on a personal level. If you don’t feel confident asking them questions, or feel assured of getting honest and open answers, it’s best to find another plastic surgeon.

    • Inform Dr. Campanile if you’re taking any supplements, vitamins or prescription medications.
    • You should also let Dr. Campanile know if you’re a smoker. Plan on quitting at least two weeks prior to surgery, and refrain from cigarette smoking throughout your recovery.

Tummy Tuck FAQs

What does a tummy tuck do and how long is recovery?

A tummy tuck is designed to tighten the abdominal muscles and remove excess fat in the abdominal area. Almost all of the tummy tucks we perform use a “drainless” method we call the C.L.A.S.S. method (Combined Lipo-Abdominoplasty Sculpting & Shaping). In the typical recovery, our patients can return to desk work and light activity in about 2 weeks, with more strenuous activity, lifting and exercise at 4–6 weeks.

Liposuction is better for localized fat deposit problem areas, while a tummy tuck is better for people with loss of abdominal muscle tone and loose skin, often following pregnancy or extreme weight loss.

Both procedures grant a slimmer look, but through different methodologies. Liposuction is often combined with a tummy tuck for more effective results.

What's the difference between a tummy tuck and liposuction?

Although both procedures can slim down the abdominal area, they are not much alike. A tummy tuck involves the removal of skin and fat along with tightening abdominal muscles, while liposuction only removes fat.

Am I a good candidate for a tummy tuck?

The ideal candidate for a tummy tuck is someone who is already in good health, has a stable weight and realistic expectations regarding their results. This surgery is not a substitute for a healthy diet and regular exercise.

If considerable weight loss is planned, a tummy tuck should be postponed until after weight has stabilized. Also, this procedure is not suitable for women who expect to become pregnant, since stretching of the abdominal muscles and skin will significantly compromise surgical results.

How is a tummy tuck procedure done?

Abdominoplasty requires general anesthesia. To begin the surgery, the surgical area is prepped and an incision is made below the belly button from hipbone to hipbone. Through the incision, the abdominal wall is surgically retightened. After that, any excess skin and fat around the lower abdomen is removed, and the incision is sutured. Patients will need help getting around for the first few days.

What kind of results can I expect after my tummy tuck?

After surgery, your abdominal contours will be flatter and firmer. If you previously had loose or hanging folds around the stomach area, those will no longer be present. Oftentimes, skin that had stretch marks is also removed during the procedure. Your navel may be relocated and look slightly different as well.

What is recovery like after a tummy tuck?

Right after your surgery, dressings will be applied to the incision area. It may be painful to stand up fully straight at first. However, once you are able to stand upright comfortably, you’ll see a noticeable difference in your silhouette. There may be some swelling after the surgery initially, which can disguise your final results. This should resolve in the first month or so.

Do all tummy tucks leave scars?

There is a scar any time your skin is cut, and our Denver abdominoplasty patients should expect some degree of scarring. However, every effort is made to minimize the scar, and its placement is low enough to be covered by clothing, swimsuits and most underwear.

It may seem prominent at first, but with proper care should fade with time. For most patients, an unobtrusive scar is well worth the tradeoff for a slimmer appearance.

How long after a major weight loss should I wait before considering a tummy tuck?

Dr. Campanile recommends waiting until your weight has stabilized for several months after major weight loss. This helps to ensure the results are predictable and long-lasting.

Can the incision from the tummy tuck be hidden under my swimsuit or underwear?

Yes. The incision is typically placed low on the abdomen so it can be covered by most swimsuit bottoms and underwear.

Will my belly button look different after the surgery?

In many cases, the belly button is reshaped or repositioned as part of the procedure. It’s designed to look natural and proportional with your new contour.

Can I have liposuction at the same time as my tummy tuck?

Yes. Many patients benefit from combining liposuction with a tummy tuck to refine the waistline and enhance overall body contour.

What kind of downtime should I expect after the procedure?

Most people can return to light desk work in about two weeks. More strenuous activity is gradually resumed over the following several weeks, under Dr Campanile’s guidance.

Will I need drains after the tummy tuck?

Most patients are good candidates for Dr. Campanile’s drainless tummy tuck technique, which does not require post-surgical drains. This generally makes recovery more comfortable and, in many cases, quicker than with traditional tummy tucks with drains.

Are the results permanent once the swelling goes down?

Tummy tuck results are long-lasting, especially when you maintain a stable weight and healthy lifestyle. However, major weight changes or future pregnancies can affect the outcome.

Will stretch marks be removed with the excess skin?

Stretch marks located on the skin that is removed will be eliminated. Any marks outside that area will remain, though they may appear less noticeable after tightening.

How is a full tummy tuck different from a mini tummy tuck?

A full tummy tuck treats the entire abdomen and may include muscle tightening, while a mini tummy tuck focuses only on loose skin below the belly button. The right option depends on where your concerns are located and how much skin tightening is required in order to achieve your desired result.

What should I do before surgery to prepare for the best outcome?

Preparing your home, arranging help for the first few days, and staying as healthy as possible can all contribute to a smoother recovery. Wearing comfortable clothing on surgery day also helps.

Tummy Tuck Recovery Tips

It’s completely normal to feel sore and tired following a tummy tuck. Although this exhaustion may be discouraging at first, try not to fight it and instead just rest. Your body is telling you it needs time to heal.

  • Your waistline will look slimmer, although this may be disguised by bandages near the start of your plastic surgery recovery.
  • You may have to wear a special compression garment to aid healing.
  • Certain movements may be painful, like lifting your arms overhead or standing completely upright.
  • Your normal daily activities can usually be resumed within several days.
  • After Dr. Campanile has given the okay, you may resume more active movement and exercise.

You may feel tempted to get on your feet quickly. However, it’s best to take it easy and give your body lots of downtime during the recovery period.
