Liposuction is one of the oldest and most well-known forms of plastic surgery. Despite this, there are a lot of misconceptions about it, and plenty of myths fueling those misunderstandings. If you are considering this procedure, it is essential that you understand how liposuction works.
There’s More Than One Type of Lipo
The first thing to know is that lipo works differently depending on which type you get. For example, we offer tumescent liposuction, which is the traditional approach. With this, saline fluid is injected into the targeted fat, helping to liquify it. Then a cannula, a thin medical wand, is inserted to suction out the fat cells.
Traditional lipo isn’t your only option. Look into newer techniques that might be better for you. We also offer VASERlipo®. This is a high-tech approach that uses lasers to liquify fat cells. It allows for more nuance in how we target areas of fat and makes it easier to remove.
It Removes Fat but Isn’t for Weight Loss
A common misconception about liposuction is that it is an ideal method for losing weight. However, it is for body contouring, not weight loss.
Essentially, liposuction removes stubborn fat that doesn’t respond to diet and exercise. So, if you are at or near your ideal weight, it can help give you the shape you want. But it won’t combat obesity or do anything significant to the number on the scale.
It Can Perfect Your Hard Work
One way of using liposuction is abdominal etching. With this, fat is strategically removed around the muscles to help them become more defined. This helps to ensure your six pack really pops. Or in the case of some women, perfect the “11” abdominals.
