Inframammary incisions are made in the crease under the breast. From this incision, your implant can be inserted below or above the chest muscle. Many women prefer this type of incision because the scar is barely noticeable in the breast fold. It also gives a surgeon the maximum amount of access to the surgical site, allowing the ability to fine-tune how the implants are placed. Whether opting for smaller breast implants or larger, this is a popular option for many women.
Periareolar Incisions
Periareolar incisions are made around the border of the areola. The benefit of this type of incision is that the scar is naturally concealed in the darker skin of the areola. However, the incision is smaller and may give the surgeon somewhat less control when placing an implant. There is also more risk of potentially affecting the milk ducts, so it is a more optimal choice for women who are not planning on breastfeeding after the procedure. If you are having a combined breast lift and breast augmentation, your surgeon will use a modified periareolar incision known as a “lollipop” or “anchor” that extends around the areola and down to the breast crease.
