Denver locals sometimes forget that sun protection is even more important at elevation. This is because the intensity of UV rays increases with altitude, since there is less atmosphere to buffer dangerous rays. Although there are treatments available from our Denver medspa to reduce the signs of sun damage,* you should still take steps to protect yourself in summer.
Making Changes
Does this mean you shouldn’t go out in the sun? Definitely not! Summer is one of the best seasons for outdoor activities in the Denver area. Taking a few precautions before heading out for fun in the sun can help protect your skin.
- Wear protective clothing. Long sleeves may feel silly in July, but clothing provides a barrier between the sun and your skin. Standard clothing is better than bare skin, but you can also purchase special clothing with SPF protection built right in. For protecting your face, a wide-brimmed sun hat is a must.
- Wear quality sunscreen and reapply as needed. Apply sunscreen before going out, and reapply throughout the day. Mineral sunscreens provide a physical barrier between your skin and the sun by blocking harmful rays. Chemical sunscreens absorb and dissipate the sun’s rays away from your skin.
- Minimize your time in the sun. As much fun as it is to sunbathe, try to keep in mind that unprotected sun exposure is one of the greatest accelerators of aging on your skin, not to mention the increased likelihood of skin cancer down the road.
Although our medspa staff can remove sun spots and other evidence of skin damage,* the best defense is still a good offense. Practice sun smarts and keep your skin young-looking for years to come.
