A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, remains one of the most popular procedures we perform here at Campanile Plastic Surgery. While many patients prefer to schedule surgery in cooler months, summer recovery is entirely manageable with a little extra planning. Here’s what Dr. Campanile tells his Denver patients about healing comfortably in warmer weather.
Plan for Indoor Recovery Time
The first 1 to 2 weeks after a tummy tuck are the most important for rest and limited activity. During this time, you’ll want to stay in a cool, comfortable environment, which means planning ahead if your home tends to get warm during Denver’s summer days. Make sure your air conditioning is working well before your procedure, and set up a recovery space, ideally on a single level of your home, with everything you need within easy reach.
Hydration Matters More in Summer
Staying hydrated is always important after surgery, but it becomes even more critical when temperatures rise. Proper hydration supports healing, helps to reduce swelling and keeps you feeling your best as your body recovers. Aim to drink water consistently throughout the day, and avoid excessive caffeine or alcohol, both of which can contribute to dehydration.
Be Mindful of Sun Exposure
Direct sun exposure on healing incisions can lead to discoloration and should be avoided for several months after your tummy tuck. If you’re spending any time outdoors during recovery, keep incision areas covered with loose, breathable clothing and avoid direct sunlight on the treated area. Once Dr. Campanile clears you for normal activity, sunscreen becomes essential for protecting your results long-term.
Loose, Breathable Clothing Is Key
After a tummy tuck, you’ll likely be wearing a compression garment to support healing and reduce swelling. In warmer weather, choose lightweight, breathable fabrics for any additional clothing layers. This helps you stay comfortable while still supporting the recovery process.
Watch for Increased Swelling
It’s normal to experience some swelling after a tummy tuck, and warmer weather can sometimes make swelling feel more noticeable. Elevating your legs while resting, staying hydrated and following your post-op instructions can all help to manage swelling during recovery. If you notice sudden or severe swelling, or any signs of infection, contact our office right away.
Adjust Your Activity Timeline
While Denver’s summer months are full of outdoor activities, it’s important to give your body the time it needs to heal before returning to exercise, hiking or other strenuous activities. Most patients can resume light activity within a few weeks, but high-impact exercise typically needs to wait six weeks or longer.
