Breast Reduction Improves Physical and Mental Wellbeing
A study published in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons has confirmed that breast reduction surgery offers physical and psychological benefits to women who undergo the procedure. The study had 49 participants respond to a questionnaire that was specifically designed to examine the results of breast reduction surgery. Documented gains included a twofold increase in physical, social and sexual wellbeing following the surgery, and satisfaction with breast appearance quadrupling after breast reduction. Decreased pain, improved quality of sleep and increased ability to exercise were several of the noted positive benefits offered by breast reduction surgery that point to an overall enhanced quality of life.
Shared Medical Appointments for Breast Reduction
Shared medical appointments can help small groups of women interested in breast reduction surgery learn about the procedure and gain emotional support. According to a recent study, these group sessions provide the surgeons with a more efficient method of delivering relevant information to prospective patients, which increased each woman’s interaction with the surgeon by four times compared to a traditional one-on-one appointment. Additional benefits of shared medical appointments include group education and mutual support.
Breast Asymmetry Affects Emotional Health in Teens
According to a study published in the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, asymmetrical breasts can negatively impact adolescent females. Researchers evaluated a number of psychosocial factors in 59 participants ranging in age from 12 to 21, all of whom had at least a cup size difference between breasts. When compared with results of a similar study that evaluated adolescent females with symmetrical breasts, the study indicated that young women who experienced asymmetry had lower self-esteem and poorer emotional wellbeing. The study suggests that early intervention and/or surgical correction may help to improve emotional health and self-image.
