Doctors have recently discovered a new improved way to perform liposuction using tiny particles of gold. Traditional liposuction removes fat via a suction technique. A doctor injects saline solution into the fat and then inserts a sharp needle-like tool through an incision to break up fat and suck it out. This technique is effective but imperfect, as sometimes nerves or connective tissue can be damaged during the process. A proposed alternative by Dr. Adah Almutairi and her brother Dr. Khalid Almutairi would inject gold nanoparticles into the fat. Infrared light directed at the site would heat up the nanoparticles and cause the fat to melt, which would then be sucked out. One advantage to this method is that fat cells burn at a lower temperature than connective tissue or nerves, thus preserving the integrity of the tissue and only targeting fat.

According to a recent report by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, liposuction was the most popular cosmetic surgery in the world in 2014. This marks the second year in a row that lipo has topped the statistical charts as the most performed cosmetic surgical procedure worldwide. Liposuction was the top procedure for women as well as for men last year, and was the number one choice of plastic surgeries for people ages 35 to 50. Given the stats, it’s no wonder that lipo is the go-to procedure for healthy candidates with stubborn pockets of fat.
More Men Getting Liposuction
The number of men getting cosmetic procedures has skyrocketed since 1997. What’s the explanation for the uptick? It turns out that just like women, men want to look good.
