Q. I’ve read a lot about mommy makeovers, but I’m still feeling uncertain. How can I tell if it’s the right choice for me?
A. Any cosmetic procedure can feel like a major decision. For some patients, the mommy makeover can feel even more monumental because it’s a combination of procedures instead of only one. My advice is if you’ve researched thoroughly and still feel undecided, come in for a consultation. That will give you the opportunity to discuss your goals and concerns, as well as review some options for a customized approach. Keep in mind that there is no commitment that comes with a consultation, so you’re free to take as long as you like to make your final decision about moving forward.
Q. What are the most common procedures included in a mommy makeover?
A. First of all, it’s important to understand that a mommy makeover is tailored for every individual. While there is no standard set of procedures for everyone, there are several that have proven to be the most popular:
- Tummy tuck
- Breast augmentation
- Breast lift
- Breast reduction
Tummy tucks are probably the most common because so many women end up with excess belly skin following pregnancy. Liposuction can be included to treat stubborn pockets of subcutaneous fat, while breast enhancement procedures can address different concerns related to breast appearance.* Additionally, thigh, body and arm lifts may be included as part of a mommy makeover for women who have undergone massive weight loss.
Q. Can facial treatments be included in a mommy makeover?
A. Absolutely. As rewarding as expanding your family can be, everyday stress can express itself as signs of aging in the face. Nonsurgical med spa treatments are commonly used in mommy makeovers for this reason.
Q. What if I might want to have more children in the future? Is it still okay to get a mommy makeover now?
A. In general, I recommend completing your family before undergoing a mommy makeover in order to ensure that there is a minimal chance of revision needed in the future if another pregnancy compromises some of the initial results. If you aren’t sure if you will become pregnant again, it’s up to you as to whether you’d like to have a mommy makeover now with the chance of future revision or wait until you’ve made your final decision.
Q. How long do I have to wait after giving birth to have a mommy makeover?
A. That depends on whether you are nursing. If not breastfeeding, I advise waiting at least 6 months after giving birth because this allows for pregnancy hormones and skin elasticity to reduce to a normal level before undergoing surgery. However, if you are nursing, I suggest waiting until at least a couple of months after weaning because hormone fluctuations continue during this time. Bear in mind that there is no hurry, as you can wait years after having children before getting a mommy makeover.
Q. What can I expect the recovery to be like?
A. Because the mommy makeover is such a varied procedure that involves a customized approach for each patient, the recovery period will vary as well. Typically, you can expect at least 1 to 2 weeks of downtime followed by several weeks of gradually resuming your normal work and activity routine.* I provide my patients with detailed post-operative care instructions so they feel more comfortable about what to expect.
